Thermal Stress

Metal naturally expands and contracts in response to changes in temperature. Over time this relative movement leads to the separation of seams and fasteners appearing the back out of their openings. Moisture can invade a roofing system through even the slightest imperfection. Even small gaps in the seams, flashings, and fasteners provide an opening significant enough for this to occur. Coatings and repairs may help on a temporary basis, but the movement will continue leading to failure of the coating.
